Grades

Student performance is expressed as using letter grades, which carry grade points and are used for calculating the semester and cumulative grade-point average:

Letter Grade

Grade points per unit of credit

A+ 4.0
A 4.0
A- 3.7
B+ 3.3
B 3.0
B- 2.7
C+ 2.3
C 2.0
C- 2.0
D+, D, D- 1.0
F 0

Grade-point average is a calculation of the total credit hours in which grades of A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, or F have been earned divided into the total number of grade points earned.

Other symbols are issued not factoring into grade points used in calculating the cumulative grade-point average:

Symbol

Description

W Withdrawal
N Grade not submitted
CR Credit authorized, but not letter grade
IP In progress
RR Progress in undergraduate course
PR Progress on graduate thesis
S* Satisfactory work
U Unsatisfactory work
I Incomplete
AU Audit

*An S grade is a grade satisfactory to the professor and normally indicates work equivalent to the letter grade of C- or higher.

A course for which only CR, but no letter grade, is given and a course in which an S or PR grade is earned will be included in earned hours but is not computed in the grade-point average.

Please refer to the Academic Catalog for general information and rules of the University Grading System.

Student Grade FAQs

I have a grade of “N.”

  • An “N” grade means that your instructor did not submit a final grade for you before the deadline date. Your instructor will have to submit a Change of Grade/Removal of Incomplete Form. Your GPA will be updated as soon as the Student Records Office receives that information from the instructor.

When can I see my grades on MyNMSU and when will my Official transcript be available?

  • Final grades are usually available for students to view on the Wednesday after finals week. As soon final grades have been released to students we will begin sending out Official Transcripts that were ordered with a “Hold for Final Grades” indicator.

How do I find my grades and can I get a print out of them?

  • Log onto your MyNMSU. Under the Student tab, click on Final Grades, select the term, and click submit. Your final grades along with the current term and cumulative GPA will appear.
  • You can print your grades, for the selected term, by selecting the File tab at the top right hand of your screen and then selecting print from the drop down menu. You can also request an Unofficial Academic Transcript through MyNMSU.
  • You can request an Unofficial Academic Transcript by clicking the Student tab, below the Quick Links box to the left of the screen, click Student Records, then Unofficial Academic Transcript.

My transcript is supposed to be sent after my degree is posted. When will it go out?

  • Your degree must be certified, by your College Dean’s Office, within 10 business days of the date final grades are posted. The University Student Records Office will send out transcripts within two business days of the degree being certified.

Will I be notified if I’m not in good academic standing?

  • If you are not in good academic standing, you will receive a copy of your grades with your academic standing through your NMSU email. A copy of your grades will not be sent out in the mail.
